Tribute to Luna by Khalliysgraphy Tribute to Luna by Khalliysgraphy
May 2008 - January 2013

I feel like I am really owing that to her.
Poor Luna passed away on 31th January. I already had a bad presentiment when I visited the park in February and she didn't showed up, but when my thoughts were confirmed a week later, it was still a great shock for me. Not so much time has passed since Laika's death and now Luna, too. As far as I know the cause of her death was not really clear first. But when I visited the park another time I found a note at the enclosure that stated she died because of an inflammation.

Standing alone at the empty enclosures (Smilla, Ronja and Kira are still there, but that day only Smilla showed up for a few seconds) made me feel very empty, too. Because of these wolves I started becomming interested in photography; I bought my first SLR camera and my skills envolved while they grew into adulthood. Still, they are not even 5 years old yet. From five sisters only three are left now and it makes me very sad.

This is something every zoo and wildlife park needs to remember: It's really, really not a good idea to jam five even-aged female wolves into one enclosure. They'll start to rival as they mature and especially european wolves tend to be more aggressive towards each other anyway.

But now some words about Luna. Luna was a very expressive wolf with a fascinating character, good in making faces and the sometimes sticking-out teeth were her trademark. Her life was rather stressfull after old alpha Maike died in 2011. She was always quite low-ranked, but Maike liked her very much. Maybe this was also a reason for Laika's (jealous) antipathy towards Luna. Things between them became very tense and on some days Laika even treated the omega wolf better than Luna. Unfortunately their dispute escalated in September 2012 and Laika died. Surprisingly, at the end of year 2012 Luna was suddenly at the top of the hierarchy. Ronja joined her and they formed a quite uncommon dual leadership. Ronja and Luna had become good friends and a strong team over the last two years.
Well ... it shouldn't last. Now Luna is gone. And I hope so much that the remaining three sisters get it together and that they will stay alive a bit longer ...

This is very sad and infuriating to read that they'd cram all these animals together regardless of their well being. I guess taking care of a park like this is certainly not easy and you have to juggle with a lot of things, but to the extend that some animals die...
Have a hug, because it is easy to feel you love these wolves a lot
I hope that the others will be well for now :(

It is indeed. It would be so easy to seperate Kira, who permanently gets into fights with Ronja, from the other two. They live in two enclosures and Kira could easily live alone in the smaller one. But somehow they just don't get that.
Well, it is very difficult, because the park lives from donations and little parking fees (2€) only. There is no entrance fee and so they don't have much money for keepers. As far as I know they are heavily understaffed.
